이주는 단지 공간을 이동하는 것만을 의미하지 않는다. 이주는 어떤 나라들의 경계뿐만 아니라 정치, 경제를 비롯하여 본국과 이주국의 시대적 시간까지도 이동하는 것을 의미한다. 한국의 60년대가 방글라데시라면, 방글라데시와 한국의 시간 간격은 40년이나 된다. 네팔에서 한 때 있었던 ‘한국은 미래의 일본’이라는 이야기처럼, 한국은 또 어딘가의 과거이다. 그리고 또 어딘가의 미래이다.

전 세계의 이주노동자의 수는 일억 칠천만정도이며, 이주노동자들이 본국에 송금하는 돈의 규모는 석유대금 다음으로 세계에서 두 번째 많은 금액이다. 이주노동자는 이러한 전 지구적인 규모에서 보면 아주 작은 개인일 뿐이지만, 개인이 감당할 수밖에 없는 이주와 관련된 갈등들은 그 돈의 규모만큼 거대하다.
대부분의 이주노동자들은 번 돈으로 가족과 친척들의 생계까지 책임진다. 물론 이주노동을 하기 위해 지불했던 브로커 비용, 네팔인의 평균임금을 13년 동안 모은 양과 같은 어마어마한 숫자의 브로커비용은 가족과 친척들의 도움 없이는 마련하기 어려운 돈이다. 이 비용은 후에 그가 타국에서 벌어들이는 돈의 분배와 관련이 있다. 그리고 그 관계는 본국을 떠난 이주노동자의 어깨를 무겁게 만드는 이유이기도 하다. 우리가 만난 이주노동자들의 몇 몇은 익숙해진 한국생활(이것은 네팔에서의 생활보다 지극히 개인이 중요한 생활이다.)로 인해 가족들과의 장기간 별거에 들어간다. 뿐만 아니라 한국생활에 완전히 적응한 이들은 본국에서 가족과 다시 만날 수 있는 지점들을 찾지 못하면서 때때로 가정파탄에 이르기도 한다. 본국으로 돌아간 그들은 ‘네팔사람들은 가만히 있었는데 내가 변했다’는 말을 한다. 한국에서 그가 변해가는 속도는 본국에서 그들의 가족이 변하는 속도보다 빠르다. 귀환 후 그들은 서로 다른 시대에 살던 서로를 어색해 하며 만난다.

90년대 초기 이주노동을 하기 위해 사람들은 관광 비자를 받아 한국에 입국하였다. 이후에도 이주하는 사람들 수가 많지 않았기에 체계가 잡혀 있지 않아 브로커 비용은 그리 큰 돈은 아니었다. 그리고서 어느 정도 시간이 지나자 브로커 비용은 점점 올라가기 시작한다. 이제는 웃돈이 필요하고 백그라운드가 필요하다. 지금은 엄청난 브로커 비용을 내고도 갈 수 없다.

우리는 한국에서 이주노동을 했던 Arjun K. Poudel,을 가이드로 초대하여 함께 부트월에 갔다. 부트월은 그의 고향이기도하다. 부트월과 거기서 근 거리에 있는 룸비니에는 두 개의 송출회사가 있는데 룸비니 송출회사와 떨어지는 달(MOON DROPS)이라는 송출회사가 바로 그것이다. 회사관련자의 고향이 부트월이라는 이유로 유난히 부트월 출신들이 한국에 많다.
부트월이라는 마을은 네팔에서도 작은 농촌지역이다. 이 곳에서 어딜 가든 능숙한 한국말을 하는 사람들을 만난다는 것은 정말 이상한 경험이 아닐 수 없다. 우리는 한국과 관련된 여러 이야기들을 듣는다. 네팔의 부트월의 어느 집 옥상에서, 공원에서, 식당에서, 시장의 한 가게에서.
여행 중에 우리는 그들의 갈등을 본다. 이주를 회상하는 사람들, 이주를 미워하는 사람들, 다시 이주를 꿈꾸는 사람들... 그 갈등 안에서 이주의 이면, 한국이란 나라에 대한 의심 등 여러 층위를 발견한다. 무엇이 진짜고 거짓인지도 구분할 수 없을 만큼 개개인의 상황은 다르고 복잡하다. 심약한 개인은 이주의 경계 안에서 분열적인 개인으로 변해 간다.

그들의 이야기를 듣는 동안 한국은 또 다른 의미가 된다. 한국은 개인의 욕망, 가족의 욕망과 결부된다. ‘한국’은 그들에게 이곳을 벗어나는 하나의 수단, 꿈을 이룰 수 있는 도구, 부의 상징, 그리고 수많은 사건을 낳는 의심덩어리 자체가 된다. 그것이 부트월에서의 한국이다.

Immigration means more than mere transfer. It means not only a boundary between some countries, as well as politics and economy, immigration means transfer of the age of one country to another. If Bangladesh is in the sixties of Korea, nevertheless, there is forty-year chronological gap between the two countries. As once there was a saying in Nepal, 'Korea is Japan of the future' Korea would be the past of one country. Also, the future for some others.

The population of migrants of the world is around one hundred and seventy million and the global scale of the money that are transferred to their own countries takes second place after the oil payments. Each migrant worker might seem as a mere individual, however, the complications regarding to the immigration that they are going through are as enormous as the scale of the money behind the reality.

Most of the migrant workers take responsibilities for their families as well as the relatives' livelihood. Of course, the cost for the broker they had to spend they could not make the gigantic figure of the money without their families and relatives, which is average wage of thirteen years in Nepal. And the division of this cost become related the money they make in an alien land. The relationship is one of the reasons that makes their shoulders heavy.

Some of the migrant workers that we have met going through a long term separation due to their accustomed life in Korea, that is very focused on their personal life. Moreover, for those who settled down completely in Korea, miss the point or chance that they can reunite with their families and some of their families eventually become destroyed. After they return home, they realize and say that I am the one who has changed. The changing speed of his nature in Korea is faster than that of Nepal. After return to homeland, they meet each other from the different times and feel uncomfortable.

In early 90's, they came with tourist visas to work in Korea. At that time, they did not need big money for the brokers since there were not many immigrants. However, after a while, the price started to increase. But now, they need to pay premiums and connections to get visas and, even with enormous amount, it is almost impossible to get a visa.

Inviting Arjun K., Poudel, who once were migrant workers In Korea, as guides, we visited Butweal together. Butweal is also their hometown. In a place called Roombini adjacent to Butweal, there are two companies that send people abroad. One is 'Roombini Company' and the other is called 'Moon Drops'. Just because involved people are from Butweal, there are especially many people from the town In Korea. The town Butweal is a small agricultural region In Nepal. It is unexplainably bizarre that how easy you can meet Nepalese speak fluent Korean every where in the town. In the journey, we get to hear many stories related to Korea. We witness their complications in a rooftop of a house, in the park, in restaurants, at a shop in a market. From the people who recall the immigration, those who hate it, and those who dream about it again… Their conflicts reveal many levels such as the other face of immigration or the doubts about a country called Korea. As every individual's situation is different from another and complicated, it is hard enough to believe what is true and what is not. The individuals of weak-minded are changed into disrupted ones in the boundary of immigration.

While listening their stories, I realize Korea becomes another meaning. Korea is associated with the desire of individual and family. 'Korea' becomes a means to escape Butweal, a tool to achieve their dreams, symbol of wealth, and a pack of doubts. That is what Korea means in Butweal.
