믹스라이스 채널과 천막극장
일년에 두 번 정도 있는 지역축제에서 우리는 함께 천막을 짓고 천막극장을 만든다. 천막극장은 이주노동자들과 함께 만든 비디오를 상영하는 극장일 뿐만 아니라 우리의 개념을 표현하는 하나의 장이기도 하다. 우리는 작업한 텍스트문구를 천막에 붙이거나 전단지를 만들어 나누어주기도 한다. 또한 '토사구팽(토끼 사냥이 끝나면 사냥개는 버린다는 뜻의 속담)'같은 속담을 여러 아시아의 언어로 즉석에서 써보기도 한다.(이 속담은 한국정부가 외국인노동자들을 대하는 태도를 빗대어 쓴 것이다.) 이 상영의 주된 관람객은 이주노동자들과 지역주민들이다.
이러한 활동과 더불어 우리는 일종의 토크쇼인 믹스라이스 채널을 진행한다. 채널은 하나의 주제를 두고 서로의 의견, 불평, 혹은 상황의 설명, 설득 등 여러 어법을 동원하여 적극적으로 이야기하는 것이다. 참여자는 미리 연락을 취해 초대하기도 하지만, 축제같이 여러 사람들이 모이는 곳에서는 즉석에서 토론자를 섭외하기도 한다. 이주노동자는 자신이 직접 쓴 글을 읽어 내려가기도 하고, 무책임한 자기나라 정부에게 호소하거나, 한국정부에게 바라는 점을 이야기하고, 회사에서 한국 사람에게만 쉬운 일만 준다고 불평하기도 한다. 천막극장과 난잡한 축제의 분위기는 채널의 좋은 배경이 된다. 채널의 사회는 믹스라이스 회원들과 믹스라이스에 참여하는 외국인노동자들이 진행한다. 우리는 주제를 기획하여 가지고 가면 언제든지 마이크와 의자만으로도 함께 이야기 할 수 있다.
이번에 소개되는 작업들은 지역축제와 이주노동자공동체를 찾아가 제작된 것이다. 미얀마인 <뚜라씨 이야기>처럼 준비해 온 ‘이주노동자의 편지’라는 제목의 글을 읽어내려 가고, <강라이씨의 음악다방>처럼 자신이 좋아하는 여러 가지 한국, 네팔노래를 소개하면서 한국에서 살아가기에 대한 작은 제안을 해본다. 공동체들은 저마다 목적과 그에 따른 여러 가지 방식으로 그들이 원하는 것에 대해 이야기 한다. 용인 인도네시아 공동체의 경우 인도네시아 정부와 브로커의 관계 그리고 여성이주노동자에 관한 이야기를 나누고, 고용허가제 문제로 명동성당에서 농성중인 이주노동자들은 1년 가까이 자신들의 노동조건과 이주노동자 정책에 관해 끊임없는 투쟁과 지친 일상에 관해 이야기 한다. 또 하나는 버마 민주주의를 염원하는 미얀마 공동체의 이름이자 채널제목<버마행동>은 그들이 이주노동자로서 자신에 관해 적극적인 이야기를 하고자 하며 동시에 본국의 군사정부에 관하여 끊임없이 비판을 한다. 그들은 이주노동자의 실정을 알리기 위해 매우 많은 활동을 모색하고 있으며 노동자로서도 매우 주체적이다.
우리는 그들의 일상적인 장소 (예들 들어 주민들이 지나다니는 골목길, 농성천막)에서 토크쇼를 진행한다.
우리는 기존의 질문과 답이 정해진 인터뷰에서 벗어나 즉흥적이면서 자유로운 토크쇼를 지향한다.
우리는 시간을 정해 놓지 않으며 말하고 싶은 만큼 말 할 수 있다.
우리는 장소의 제약을 받지 않고 길거리나 후미진 골목을 선호한다.
우리는 대화가 격해져도 좋고, 싸워도 좋으며, 욕을 하거나 노래를 불러도 좋다.
또한 우리는 이주노동자센터 한글교실, 이주노동자 공동체 등을 찾아가 한국에서 가장 많이 들었고, 가장 많이 사용하고 있는 한국말(언어)을 수집하였다. 그리고 수집된 말들을 모아 이주노동자밴드인 Stop crack down Band에게 이 말들을 이용하여 즉흥적으로 노래를 부탁하였다. 이 수집된 말들은 <섞인말들>의 노래가사로 이용되었다.
우리가 수집한 단어들은 한국인 인식 속에 외국인이주노동자들이 어떻게 자리 잡고 있는지 확인할 수 있는 지표가 될 것이다.
상대방에게 모욕감을 주고, 때론 친밀감의 표현으로 사용하는 명령어와 저속어로 몽타주 된 노래와 불평과 호소 설득으로 가득 찬 영상들이 이 낯선 관계회복을 위한 작은 제안이기를 바란다.

Mixrice Channel and Marquee theatre
We set up a small playhouse using a tent in a local festival which is hell twice an year.
The playhouse which is participated immigrated workers is a place to play video with our concept. We put worked phrases to the tent and also give you a letter-press- poster. As well as we try to write some Korean proverbs like ‘TOSAGUPENG’(This means ‘Throw field dog away after rabbit-hunting) with various Asian languages.(The proverb is by Korean government to perjure treating foreign workers) In fact, real visitors of this video are immigrated workers and local citizen.
During the showings, we hold a Mixrice channel, which is a sort of a talk show. The purpose of this channel is to set a theme and actively talk about it by using various conversation methods such as ceremonial places, participants are sometimes picked up immediately. Immigrated workers read letters that they wrote by themselves, appeal to the indifferent government of their countries, say things that they hope to be done towards the Korean government and sometimes complain that all the easy works are given to the Koreans in the company. Marquee theatres and disordered ceremony atmosphere become a good background for the channel. The members of Mixrice and foreign workers participating in Mixrice take the hole of the host for the channel. The showing itself is a medium where people gather, so when a theme is planned and provided, we can talk to each other anytime, just having a microphone and some chairs.
We meet communities of immigrated workers in this work. They try to do what they want by using their specific goals and variety methods. The immigrated workers who are protesting against an employment license system in Myong-dong church progress a never-ending struggle of their working conditions and the policy of them for a year. They look for a lot of activities in order to let people know immigrated workers’ facts and they are subjective as workers. We’ve met another community called ‘Burmese action’, which wishes Burmese’s democracy. They want to talk about themselves as immigrated workers and criticize the Korean military government.
We have a talk show at their usual places such as a side street and tents.
We prefer adlib and free talking than certain ordered interview.
We don’t make a time restrictively but we can talk whenever they want.
We don’t really matter any place but we prefer streets or an out-of-the-way place.
The conversation can be very violent fight, and participants in the talk show can sing any song or say swear words if they want.
Moreover, we went to Korean language institutes for immigrated workers and their communities and then collected the most used Korean words from them. The collected words can be used as a lyric song. We ask Stop crack down which is an immigrated worker band to sing a song with those words, and teach what they want through their own languages. A lot of strange words what they say will be a part of the lyric of their song. The words what we collected will be an index that can be understood how foreign immigrated workers involve in Korean’s awareness.
Also, We hope it’s the good way to solve the awkward relationship through the scenes.
