The post-capitalism of Korea exists as a complicated system that has contradictions of the past and the future. In addition, there is still skepticism on the neo-liberalism as a one-sided economic globalization that it would ever bring us the equality and coexistence.
Although its economic scale remarkably takes the 11th place in the world and its GNP is on the 49th place (by 2004¡¯s standard), we can still witness a colonial attribute in historical, cultural, political, or economical part of Korea. Thus, we intend to call this attribute as ¡®affluent colony¡¯, which is quoted from the article written by Bookgando in the board of Foruma homepage and we think this is significant word to reflect capital that has occupied Korea. The term ¡®colony¡¯ can be comprised in any meanings, such as the colony of central power of a country itself, that of Western in a broader sense and that of superficial capitalism.
By the economical open, this ¡®affluent colony¡¯, depresses one side of economy, at the same time, makes profits on the other. Moreover, the prosperity caused various kinds of expected and unexpected migrations. Korea is ¡®the country of migration¡¯ that the greatest exporting of the youngest population of the world has been happening, the secret marriages with Vietnam, Cambodia, and other East Asian countries are progressing, and cheap labor are imported from the under developed countries.
Ironically, Korea is a country of trauma that experienced forced emigration and the exporting the labor in colonial times in the early 20th century.
Combined with the trauma and the division, there are both excess and at the same time absence in terms of psychology and material in Korean society. Moreover, those are expressed as general indifference, ignorance, and exclusion on the strangers.
However, more importantly we are also indifferent and ignorant on ourselves as well. This is why we are concentrating on the subject of migration in a broad meaning that indifference and ignorance, which are led from the extreme excess and absence. Therefore, all kinds of migration are included as issues, such as labor immigration, international marriage, domestic moving from the country to the city, and other kinds caused by capital.
The slogan of the press, the media, and the government seems concerned to the immigrant workers and friendly on the support, and it made people to pay attention now. However, there is hardly any difference between now and then, since four years ago when Mixrice started the move.
Although there is no improvement in reality, immigrant workers have made changes by themselves. Early this year, they organized an ¡®Immigrant Labor Union¡¯ centering on Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Inchon. Moreover, those who stayed for long time in Korea are actively participating through contributions their journals to progressive press or participation in programs of civic broadcasting channels. Nevertheless, the more they made active commitments to the society, the more the control and deportation have intensified that has become everyday routine now.
Our friends from Nepal and Bangladesh have been evading the Immigration Control Authority who are stationed in the places, such as the work, around the houses, underground stations, and so on. When the authorities appear they share the information of the squad¡¯s location through the very mobile phones they purchased in ¡®the affluent colony¡¯. And they thread through allies and houses, and detour in the city.
So, unfortunately, the ¡®Why kicking out old good friends¡¯ phrase is still valid.
Those joined in the ¡®Immigrant Labor Union¡¯ mostly become the objects of the control since they are not registered. So they think the main purpose of the control is to oppress the union itself.
No matter how much public pay their attention to the issues of immigrant workers, the problem of the control and compulsory exile is current, urgent, and only between the Human Rights Committee and the Immigrant Labor Union.
This urgent problem is exposed as numerous assemblies and demonstrations, which have been progressed in an old formal way. For this conventional way of delivering our points was quite monotonous, uncreative and not progressive enough for us or for joined activists, it was not easy to make enough communication with the issues. Therefore, apart from the ¡®closedness¡¯ that we have constantly pointed out to solve, we also have to propose a union that is in a position to cooperate with us or suggest a way to struggle as a association. Assembly and demonstration are still effective to us, yet they need to be more opened in terms of form and content, and convert into something that awakens our sensation and consciousness.
As well as the solidarity activity on the issue of labor migration, we intend to initiate rather unusual voluntary performance and cooperate as a loose network. The place of the performance and cooperation could be as symbolic as the building of ¡®Committee of man Rights¡¯, or ¡®Small and Medium Business Administration¡¯, somewhere in Dongdaemun where the immigrant workers live, a recess alley of an area like Ahnyang, through internet, papers, or flyers.
And so we expect ¡®Mixterminal¡¯ to be like a bus stop in a country for various people, who are involved in diverse activities in the context of ¡®migration¡¯, such as immigrant workers, photographers, sociologists, as well as ¡®alternative trading¡¯. So, that independent or cooperative works and projects can be achieved on this place. Even though started from the issue on the labor migration, beyond the matter, we have been paying all the attention to the migration related system in terms of capital in general and its reality in Korea. The migration issue has never been raised in Korean society. And we firmly believe that there are great matters to be revalued in this colony.
