International Migrant Worker¡¯s Day

The trip of 20 kg

Date| Dec. 16~19 (10 to 6)
Location| Marronnier Park at Daehangno (16~18), Jongmyo Park(19)
Participants| TTai QuiLa |Mixrice|

This exhibition was prepared by a group of image creators to commemorate 2004 International Migrant Worker's Day. There have been many people who recorded and demonstrated the movements of migrant workers in Korea with photographs, videos, writings and other media.
These exist as a history of migrant worker's movement and as a trace of their lives. We hope that these will demolish the wall of discrimination and prejudice little by little and help us in this society knowing the meaning of coexist.
This exhibition was prepared by a photographer group TTai QuiLa that consists of mainly photo journalists, MIXRICE who supports migrant workers with spontaneous cultural activities, Tujaeng&Bab (Direct Action) and other migrant workers.

Ttai QuiLa
Ttai QuiLa was formed by photojournalists working for diverse progressive media in January 2004. Ttai Quila' aims to expand the vistas of photojournalism, activate criticism and speak about social issues by photograph. Ttai Quila's first group work was a flash art titled 'The public is the sovereign' dealing with the impeachment of the president Roh. They are now concentrating on seminars for boost of criticism and running diverse projects related.

Mixrice Channel and Tent Theater
Mixrice builds a tent theater for a local festival every twice a year. The tent theater is a space for screening videos produced by migrant workers and a ground for expressing themselves at the same time. Mixrice designs texts and display them in the tent, distribute handouts or interpret proverbs such as 'tosagupaeng'(A thing is cherished only as long as it is useful: intended for the Korean government's attitude toward migrant workers) to different Asian languages on the spot. The main audiences of the performance are migrant workers and local residents.
Mixrice also hosts a talk show called 'Mixrice Channel'. In the talk show, panels are asked to actively speak about a topic using different forms of wording such as explanation, persuasion or complaint. Panels for the talk show are usually invited in advance but in case of festival, anyone on the spot may be invited as a panel. A panel may prepare a reading of his own writing, appeal to the government of Korea or his home country or make a complaint against his boss who treats them badly. The tent theater and the hubbub of festival create a unique atmosphere for the Mixrice Channel. Mixrice Channel is hosted by members of Mixrice including migrant workers.

Fight & Food
From the pleasure of cooking and eating together to the pleasure of fight!
Fight & Food has been organizing dinners on every Saturday together with the migrant workers who were going on the sit-down protest at Myeong-Dong Cathedral. Fight & Food is planning to keep solidarity in various ways.

Have you heard about forced migration? Cross-border movement of labor population was inevitable in the capitalist society and it was also inevitable for migrant workers having difficult lives. They have been deeply hurt by the capitalist government of Korea whose goal was to maximize productivity despite the fact that Korea invited them to fill up the vacancy of 3D(Dirty, Dangerous, Difficult) occupations that are no longer preferred by Koreans. Migrant workers have been exploited as victims of the IMF crisis and driven out to death by the Act on the Employment. Imagine the life of a migrant worker who is treated as criminal while his right to work is rejected. What the trunks in the cramped room of a few square meters where over 10 migrant workers are squeezed in tell you? They are 'unregistered' migrant workers who need to be ready to hide away from the eyes of migration bureau. Their lives in Korea show how violent capitalism and capitalist government can be to a human being.

December 18 is the day when International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families was concluded by the United Nation. 18 hundred million migrant workers and the labor camp around the world urge the international community to ratify the convention and make fresh determination for struggle. Sine the UN concluded the convention, migrant workers and supporting bodies around the world has carried on campaigns urging for ratification of the convention and the convention has finally come into force as 20 countries ratified in 2003 that is 12 years after the UN conclusion.

According to this convention, a migrant worker has complete freedom to leave, freedom of ideology and right to form a labor union regardless of any condition for a migrant worker. A migrant worker should also be protected from forced labor, deportation, any form of torture or inhumane treatment.

The UN convention was introduced in order to protect the migrant workers and their family who are in the blind spot of human rights as they are often excluded from the category of citizen or resident in various international treaties. It also means that a migrant worker is accepted as a social reality not just a workforce.

However, what is the reality of the migrant workers in Korea? Korea that is a receiving country as well as a sending country of migrant workers did not even ratify this convention. The international convention that is already in operation doesn't mean any more than a piece of paper and it is not even secured for a migrant worker to live neither as a worker nor as a human being in this country.

The reality is that migrant workers are just being used and wasted; the internationally notorious trainee system still exist as they are not considered to be human beings and brutal crackdown and deportation are constantly practiced by the government that in fact has tacitly spawned unregistered migrant workers. They get injuries while running away from gas gun and net gun not to be deported back home. They hang themselves and jump into the ocean under circumstance that not only the lives of themselves but also their family back home are threatened. The brutal reality is that the migrant workers are constantly deported by unjust charges of anti-Korea activist or terrorist as they criticize the false immigration policies of the Korean government and ask for their rights.

On 57th anniversary of the international migrant worker's day, we demand the government of Korea to fulfil the UN convention on the protection of migrant workers with sincerity.
The inhumane crackdown against unregistered migrant workers, deportation, the trainee system that allows an employer to exploit migrant workers and, the Act on the employment of foreign workers, the new type of slavery that doesn't guarantee the basic rights of laborer including freedom of choice of workplace; We disclose that these are not only against the international convention but also driving all migrant workers' lives into death. Moreover, we make a basic demand upon the government of Korea to accept a migrant worker as the same worker and therefore a migrant worker can live a life of human being in which his human rights including the rights to work are guaranteed.
